Greenidge batted eleven hours to score his century while Viv Richardson posted a high Test score of 226; thirty one years would pass before Australia managed another series win against West Indies again.

The 1960s

This series was notable because it ended in a tie. Both captains, Frank Worrell and Richie Benaud, encouraged their teams to play attacking cricket prior to tour; as a result, five incredible days of thrilling cricket in front of record crowds ensued – as David Woodhouse noted: it might have signified brighter times ahead for cricket after the 1950s’ doldrums had subsided.

By the time of their ’84/85 tour of Australia, the West Indies had already established themselves as one of the top powers in world cricket. A stunning 3-0 series win against Kim Hughes’ Australia earlier that year in the Caribbean marked what many believe was their peak period of dominance.

Windies’ golden summer continued at Loxton with an entertaining match in front of an enthusiastic capacity crowd. Greg Haynes of Victoria County recalls being struck early on by Winston Davis delivery that seemed likely to go for four but actually turned into six runs instead.

After an exhausting journey that included flights between Sydney and Melbourne, tourists finally reached Loxton.
