First Innings
South African players gather around a board inscribed with “CHAMPIONS,” smiling broadly and exchanging affectionate touches such as hugging or kissing with each other and their support staff, taking it all in.
Jay Shah then hands over the ICC Mace to Bavuma who picks it up and holds onto it while holding his son high above and hugging team-mates while still taking in everything that has just transpired at Lord’s; surely one night that won’t soon be forgotten as celebrations start in earnest? And then when that final whistle finally sound, celebrations began and all-out joy was experienced!
Second Innings
South Africa may have lost this match and series, but they should take pride in the fight they put up against an impressive Australia team. Dewald Brevis caught everyone’s attention during T20Is with his flair and pace but has struggled in ODIs; today was a good sign. Cameron Green and Alex Carey each scored half centuries to push Australia over 300.
Ellis almost takes Brevis out with an incredible display of fielding: full length dive across the pitch at backward point to stop ball on bounce that would have cost one run; took several quick balls then lofted one over mid off for four runs.
Brevis poses a threat in the middle, but Zampa keeps him at bay with an arsenal of spin. A few defensive shots slip past him but nearly get run out from Cooper Connolly backward square when the spinner unleashes a short flat delivery that beats Brevis back and nearly hits him on his pads, but Brevis manages to avoid being hit by his throw at backward square.
Third Innings
South Africa made their international cricket debut in 1888-89 when they hosted an England cricket team. While South African cricketers at first were no match for either Australia or England at this stage, over time their abilities improved until by the first decade of the 20th century they had become formidable rivals of Australia, England, and New Zealand until apartheid restricted international play in 1960.
South Africa was reinstated into international limited-overs cricket competition in 1991 and quickly established itself as one of the strongest sides in world cricket – becoming one of only five teams ever to never finish outside of the top five in any major limited-overs competitions.
Proteas haven’t been at their best with bat or ball in this match-up against Australia, but their bowlers have made short work of them in this contest. Subrayen had Head stumped early in his spell while nearly getting Dwarshuis as well – his next delivery hit Dwarshuis square on and should have been called an lbw decision but instead the umpire allowed it.
South Africa were given hope when Ellis struck a single, but their hopes quickly vanished when Brevis struck an outside edge over mid off for four. South Africa were reduced to 263-9 and have an ambitious target of 367 from 240 balls remaining.
Final Innings
AB de Villiers has come back swinging and is taking full advantage of this new ball to put Australia under pressure with his trademark aggressive cricket – and will need his expertise for South Africa to remain formidable.
But there’s no cause for alarm just yet; Australia’s lower order can play big innings and they have plenty of experience doing so. Plus they boast plenty of top end firepower with Marsh and Dwarshuis ready to keep scoring runs at an alarming rate.
South Africa need a win here to avoid falling into the relegation zone while Australia requires one in order to remain in contention for a semifinal berth.
Proteas were under pressure to deal with spin, which they did remarkably in their opening game against Afghanistan. Their batsmen kept Afghani spinners at bay while bowlers particularly fast bowlers and Maharaj topped their performance.
After their emphatic victory at Lord’s, they now have an opportunity to do something extra-special at Lord’s. Bavuma takes the ICC Mace in hand and raises it proudly above his head – his team-mates eagerly follow suit as they embrace both this momentous moment and glorious conditions.
ICC will hope this victory can reignite interest in Test cricket among South Africans who are becoming disenchanted with franchise T20 cricket and losing many of its finest players to overseas franchise T20 leagues.
The South Africa National Cricket Team Vs Australian Men’s Cricket Team Match Scorecard highlights how the Proteas’ remarkable performance can inspire fans and restore belief in the traditional format. While the Proteas might not be able to match other franchise teams’ financial offerings abroad, their win should give hope that their proud cricketing legacy may still exist at home.
