The Bears’ 46 defense featured future Hall-of-Famer Richard Dent, who recorded 1.5 quarterback sacks and forced two fumbles. William “The Refrigerator” Perry also contributed significantly, running for two touchdowns while often leading blockers on goal line plays.

Running Backs
After both teams went three and out on their initial two possessions, the Patriots’ long-dormant running game showed signs of life with help from a strong defensive performance and were able to break open a tie game and win for the second consecutive time.
Rhamondre Stevenson set off New England’s offensive drive with a 10-yard run, setting the pace early on. They advanced deep into Bears territory before two defensive front plays by New England put an end to Chicago’s field goal attempts: Jaquelin Roy made an outstanding run stop and Deatrich Wise delivered a devastating sack shortly thereafter.
On Chicago’s next drive, they were able to move the ball, but an incompletion and forced fumble on 3rd-and-long led to another punt.
Meanwhile, New England held firm during the second quarter; Brenden Schooler and Keion White both contributed one of New England’s five sacks while their defense kept Chicago off of all four third-down conversion attempts preventing any potential scores from the Bears.
Drake Maye looked in control for the Patriots as the second half began, connecting with Demario Douglas on third down to convert 3rd-and-3 and then finding Kayshon Boutte for 19-yard gain on 4th down. Following a punt return by their opponent, they gained two first downs before scoring 13-3 with a 37-yard field goal kick from Jake Elliott.
Anfernee Jennings and Sione Takitaki made key tackles on Bears’ next drive, as Anfernee Jennings and Sione Takitaki showed their ability to hold off any further offensive pressure from Swift despite third down attempts. Swift ended up gaining only one yard on his final two runs despite an offensive line’s best efforts.
New England’s defense made their presence felt on the next Bears drive as Christian Elliss and Brenden Schooler combined for two sacks and forced fumbles en route to good field position at their own 23-yard line. A short run by Stevenson followed by an incomplete third down pass forced New England out of red zone territory for the first time all game long.
Wide Receivers
The Patriots traveled to Chicago for their Week 10 matchup against the Bears that was touted as an initial round rookie quarterback battle.
While New England’s Drake Maye has had his moments, Caleb Williams is better supported than Maye by his supporting cast on Chicago.
The Bears offense has struggled this season, but their defense has been instrumental in their success. Their “46 defense” ranks among the top-five units in several categories such as scoring defense and turnovers.
Bears players boast not only an outstanding run defense but also an elite pass rush led by Pro Bowlers Vontae Davis and Julius Peppers, with talented young playmakers like wide receiver Earl Bennett and tight end Greg Hawthorne among their roster.
Matt Forte stands out as the main offensive asset on this Bears team, having rushed for over 1,000 yards this season and six touchdowns despite the Bears offense not producing much thus far. With him leading the charge forward he allows them to create big plays which has helped spark their offense when it has not done its part recently.
However, the Patriots’ pass attack has struggled to provide any spark. So far this season they’ve only scored 11 touchdowns while losing three straight games; top wideout Rob Gronkowski has suffered injuries that have prevented his consistent play from helping energize their attack.
Wide receiver James White is known to make big plays and often involves touchdowns for the Patriots, helping move the ball downfield on third downs with ease. White’s performance at wide receiver is just one reason behind their success at moving the ball downfield on third down.
White is joined on the Patriots by veteran Keenan Allen and rookie Rome Odunze as wide receiver options, and Bears defense has struggled to stop Allen, with his wide target radius that allows for stretching of the field, breaking tackles and creating extra yardage after contact. Allen has already recorded five receptions totaling 102 yards with two touchdowns over the past two weeks.
Tight Ends
Hunter Henry is on track to surpass his career highs for receptions and receiving yards. Over his last two games he has collected seven catches, providing Tom Brady a key target in short passing plays. If Henry can continue making contributions at tight end for New England Patriots it could help their offense find its groove offensively.
The Patriots haven’t done an especially great job this season defending against the run, and allowing 167 rushing yards to the Titans was another low point. Rookie running back Drake Maye has found some success running behind poor protection and an inconsistent offensive line; but for him to do more the team must improve its rushing attack if it wants more points scored on them.
New England Special Teams has been an area of strength this season, and Marcus Jones remains their most effective returner. He’s amassed two punt returns of over 60 yards each this season and ranks second in the NFL with an average punt return distance of 15.6 yards – his big plays can alter the course of games drastically.
The Patriots have struggled in both areas this season, yet both units were impressive against the Titans. Joey Slye scored a 56-yard field goal just left of center during the first quarter and Corey Coleman made a 45-yard punt return that set up their offense at midfield during the second half.
On Monday Night Football, the Patriots will look to extend their winning streak against the Bears at Soldier Field.
This marks their first game back since losing 33-14 back on Oct 24 2022; prior to that, these two teams met 16 times with New England holding an edge (10-4 in regular season series, 10-4 including postseason), winning each time with five victories each time; including winning all five meetings held here locally (98.5 The Sports Hub with Bob Socci as play-by-play announcer and Scott Zolak providing color analysis.

Linebackers
Drake Maye and Caleb Williams didn’t exactly dazzle in the Patriots-Bears encounter. Although both rookies made some positive plays, neither one displayed any stunning throws or turnover-worthy plays – Maye finished 15-of-25 for 184 yards while Williams finished 16-30 with 120.
As it turned out, both teams combined for four sacks and five forced turnovers during a 19-3 win for New England. To strengthen their run defense further, LB Joe Giles-Harris was promoted from their practice squad; he’ll start alongside Jahlani Tavai on the second level of defense.
The Bears may be without defensive tackle Adam Shaheen (ankle) and defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (shoulder), although Ngakoue was just added to their active roster earlier this week and will need time to adapt to their defensive system.
All starters should be available and healthy for this game, with defense boasting an expansive and deep team capable of covering a lot of ground. Veteran defensive end Richard Dent will lead an excellent linebacking tandem featuring Dan Hampton and Otis Wilson while future Hall-of-Famer Dave Duerson should keep things secure at strong safety Gary Fencik in the secondary.
New England boasts an extensive pass-rushing roster, but they could be limited by injuries at both tackle and guard positions. Mike Onwenu has been utilized on both sides and will likely start at left tackle against Chicago.
Chicago and Boston both lack strong running games, so this matchup will come down to which defense can best stop their opponent’s rushing attack.
Rookie cornerback Logan Ryan will need to step his game up if he wants to compete for starting roles alongside Malcolm Butler and Jamar Taylor; for Chicago’s part, fullback Matt Suhey and running back Stanley Morgan can provide sparks on offense; Suhey proved himself invaluable last season on special teams.
