Top-ranked Texas and Ohio State face off in an explosive season opener that could determine College Football Playoff seeding, Heisman Trophy contender status, and much more. New Buckeyes quarterback Julian Sayin also makes his first start against one of the five teams this weekend.

Sayin connects with Parker Livingstone for a 32-yard touchdown pass, giving Ohio State an early advantage in the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Vs Texas Longhorns Football showdown.

Texas gets another attempt inside its red zone but fails to convert on fourth down, allowing the Buckeyes’ defense to maintain control and keep the momentum on their side.

Pregame

The Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas Longhorns are involved in one of the most anticipated season-opening matchups ever seen in college football, creating an engaging opening contest.

You should cancel all plans, silence your phone and tune into this epic showdown that features Heisman hopeful Julian Sayin, star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and an unconfirmed quarterback named Arch Manning (if indeed one exists).

Both teams have struggled to establish any sort of rhythm offensively, leading to a scoreless deadlock at the end of the first quarter. Texas reached Ohio State 10-yard line twice but couldn’t capitalize.

Meanwhile, OSU made some errors during its initial possession with facemask penalties against Colin Simmons and defensive holding calls against Malik Muhammad that put them back at their 1-yard line.

ESPN’s College GameDay has featured Texas and Ohio State four times over the past five seasons. Not only has GameDay visited Forty Acres for 2024 opener, but the show has also broadcast from their CFP semifinal victory against Oregon at Cotton Bowl as well as their season opener against Notre Dame at Ohio Stadium.

First Quarter

Ohio State led Texas early with field goals from Mike Nugent and Troy Smith as well as an Arch Manning pass to Parker Livingstone that scored a touchdown, but Texas couldn’t mount any significant comeback attempts in the second quarter.

ESPN College GameDay made this game an attraction, drawing sellout crowds to the Horseshoe. Notably, this marked the first meeting between No.1 Oklahoma State and No. 2 Texas since 2009 under Vince Young as coaches of each squad respectively.

Arch Manning has had difficulty adapting to the hostile environment, amassing only 61 passing yards so far. Longhorns’ offense faltered several times in the red zone due to Jermaine Mathew tipping an Arch Manning pass and Sonny Styles intercepting an interception at UT24 in third quarter.

Ohio State takes over with 8:29 remaining in the first half, following a failed fourth-down conversion by CJ Baxter of Texas, punting to their own 35 and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin having an effective start, connecting with Carnell Tate for a 67-yard reception to reach the Texas 24 and later finding Jeremiah Smith for 13 yards to reach 40.

A 52-yard Jack Bouwmeester kick provided them a good starting point before Sayin found Smith for 17-yard gain to the Longhorns 24 and after OSU defense made big stops on fourth down and punted back to OSU 35 before OSU took control.

Second Quarter

As expected, this game has turned into a defensive battle, with both teams struggling to establish any sort of offensive rhythm. Texas quarterback Arch Manning has completed 3-of-5 for 13 yards while Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is yet to take a shot downfield.

Jack Bouwmeester kicked off the second quarter with a 50-yard punt, setting Ohio State at their own 25. Ohio State maintained their ground game for two first downs as James Peoples gained six and five yards respectively to reach UT40.

Following a fumble by Ohio State, Sayin connected with Jeremiah Smith for 16 yards for their only lead of the game with 3:26 left in the half.

Ohio State drove deep into Texas territory but were unable to make headway due to Texas’ formidable defense. Arch Manning made late attempts at hitting Parker Livingstone for a touchdown with two timeouts remaining but Jermaine Mathews tipped the ball and Lorenze Styles grabbed it for their team, marking its first turnover of the game.

Ohio State’s opening drive stalled on Texas 49-yard line as their defense held firm until Carnell Tate outraced Jaylon Guilbeau to catch Sayin’s 40-yard touchdown pass for 14-0 advantage at halftime.

Ohio State would continue their eight-play, 68-yard drive over 8:02 with their defense holding firm until eventually handing Texas their first loss of the year.

Third Quarter

Any game between nationally ranked teams is sure to be memorable, but the stakes become even greater when new starting quarterbacks make their debuts – such as Texas Longhorns sophomore Arch Manning making his inaugural start while Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin wins an offseason quarterback competition and earns his inaugural start for Columbus.

At Ohio State’s stout defense kept Texas at bay all afternoon, neither quarterback had their best game; Sayin struggled to find his rhythm while Manning was susceptible to making errors that resulted in misfired throws.

After an uneventful first half, neither team could muster much offense in the second half, which concluded tied 7-7. On Texas’ subsequent drive, however, Ohio State managed to force them into punting following Donaldson’s short gain before McGuire punted back onto their 10-yard line with 3:16 left in regulation time.

Ohio State’s defense was impressive all afternoon; unfortunately for Texas’ home opener they missed an opportunity to make an impression and remain winless after this loss left them at 0-1.

Fourth Quarter

Though they were heavily favored to win Saturday’s clash against Ohio State as national title favorites, Texas football went into this encounter lacking many of their star talent up front. That proved disastrous as Ohio State held back against their offensive prowess for an eventual 14-7 win at Ohio Stadium.

Ohio State quickly set off after receiving a short punt to drive deep into Texas territory on their second play of the fourth quarter, where Julian Sayin connected with Carnell Tate on an eight-yard touchdown play to give them an 8:02 advantage and give Ohio State an early 14-0 lead.

Texas offense continued to struggle on one of college football’s toughest road environments, as Arch Manning struggled in his debut as quarterback. Often looking indecisive and sometimes throwing passes too late or too early.

As the game entered its final minute, Texas attempted to rally with a quick drive, but Manning was sacked by Jermaine Mathews on fourth down attempt up the middle and Ohio State ran out the clock for their dominant defensive performance – their first loss this season as well as Steve Sarkisian’s first defeat as head coach of Texas Longhorns. Final

Ohio State takes over for the second half, starting with left tackle Trevor Goosby participating in all pregame warmups without sporting any cast on his hand according to 247Sports reports. He replaced Kelvin Banks in the lineup. Texas attempts converting on fourth down but CJ Baxter is stopped for only 1 yard by Ohio State’s linebackers and Ohio State assumes possession.

Jack Bouwmeester’s 50-yard punt gave Texas possession at Ohio State 25 but they were held up on fourth down at OSU 9. Ohio State forced a three-and-out and then passed off to Tate who went past Jaylon Guilbeau to score from 40 yards out and give Ohio State an early 14-7 lead with 8 minutes and 2 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Arch Manning and Texas endured a difficult start to their season opener against Ohio State in Columbus during the Ohio State Buckeyes Football Vs Texas Longhorns Football matchup.

With two timeouts remaining and an opportunity to rally in the final minutes, an intended pass for Parker Livingstone was deflected by Jermaine Mathews and Sonny Styles Jr. and ruled incomplete, effectively sealing Texas’ defeat. The result marked their season-opening loss after four seasons of success under Ryan Day.

Ohio State improved to 17-1 in non-conference games and will now prepare for an even tougher test when No. 3 Michigan comes calling next week.
