Offense
At a nationally-televised thriller that saw five ties and six lead changes, the Bengals rallied late to earn their first road victory of 2018. QB Jake Browning completed 32 of 37 passes (86.5 percent) for 354 yards with one touchdown – four completions were even made during extra period to move Cincinnati closer towards goalie range for field goals – while running back Joe Mixon ran for 132 yards on 20 carries, his third 100-yard game to begin the year.
Jaguars rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence combined two touchdowns and interceptions into one half, which saw him get sacked three times by Bengals’ defense, yet still managed a pass TD to receiver Dyami Brown as well as one to tight end Bhayshul Tuten to set up K Josh Little for a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Browning’s one-yard touchdown sneak in the final minute of regulation completed a 15-play, 92-yard drive and gave Cincinnati its only lead of the game. Lawrence attempted a deep pass that was intercepted by Logan Wilson on fourth down; due to this turnover, the Bengals were able to run out the clock.
Randy Lerner and Tyler Boyd made their Bengals debuts here; Boyd was selected in the second-round out of Oklahoma.
Both teams had multiple chances at scoring during the opening half. For Jacksonville, Lawrence delivered a seven-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Uzomah at about 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter to cap a nine-play, 76-yard drive. Meanwhile, K Evan McPherson scored their only points with an 43-yard field goal at 3:30 left in the second quarter following a 59-yard run by Chase Brown which set up Little’s 23-yard attempt from 23 yards out; unfortunately Little missed both times, though; once from 23 and he attempted another attempt for 23 yards before finally missing all four attempts with total of 13 punt returns totalling 317 punt returns this season and ending up the year with total 317 punt return yards total!
Defense
In their season-opening victory against the Jaguars, Bengals defensive was unstoppable in holding them to just 141 net yards of offense; their lowest total since 2021! Furthermore, three takeaways including two interceptions were produced by this formidable unit.
Second-year quarterback Joe Burrow began the game, but was sidelined late in the first quarter due to a toe injury. Backup quarterback Jake Browning took over for the final two and a half quarters, completing 21 out of 32 passes for 241 yards with two touchdowns while not recording an interception in this performance.
Burrow’s first drive resulted in a 92-yard scoring drive that culminated with Tyler Boyd receiving a 3-yard TD pass from Burrow. It marked their longest scoring drive of the first half, as well as marking their first time scoring on all four possessions in any game this season.
Defense continues to deliver takeaways: safety Andrew Wingard returned an interception by LB Foyesade Oluokun for 39 yards back to their 29. Additionally, LB Logan Wilson tackled Lawrence at the one-yard line on fourth down with one minute remaining, to prevent an easy rushing score and ensure no field goal would be kicked.
After this, the Bengals scored on each of their final three drives to secure victory. A 31-yard field goal from K Evan McPherson early in the third quarter gave them a 14-10 advantage, and later in that quarter, RB Chase Brown scored on an end zone run that put them up by double digits for good.
The final score was 31-17, perfectly reflecting the game’s high-scoring nature. Joe Mixon led all scorers with 117 total scrimmage yards (68 rushing and 49 receiving), earning Cincinnati player of the week honors for his efforts. This marked only the second time ever that their season opener at Paycor Stadium has ever been won; and they debuted their new uniforms which feature orange jerseys, white pants with orange stripes, and orange socks; they will again wear this set against Carolina in Week 4. This full body all-orange ensemble will appear again Thursday against Carolina Panthers since revamping before 2021 season began!
Special Teams
CINCINNATI — After an arduous first half — including second-year quarterback Joe Burrow’s ACL tear — the Cincinnati Bengals transformed a disastrous performance into an unexpected win against Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Paycor Stadium with Jake Browning leading them to an exciting 31-27 triumph at Paycor Stadium before 65,871 fans. Browning took over for injured Burrow in the second quarter and scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard sneak with 18 seconds remaining to give Cincinnati their first 2-0 start since 2018.
Chase Brown endured a heartbreaking moment on Wednesday. Late in the first half he suffered an ankle injury that forced him out for the remainder of the game – an unexpected setback in an offense that had begun picking up steam after starting slowly earlier this season.
Suffered from an injured ankle, the Jaguars found other ways to score and stay competitive in this game. Rookie running back Brayshul Tuten and wide receiver Dyami Brown each scored on touchdown runs to give their team a 17-10 halftime advantage; kicker Evan McPherson converted an early third quarter field goal into 21-10 and safety Jordan Battle returned an interception off Browning 39 yards for another touchdown to give Bengals 24-17 lead with 4:08 remaining in fourth quarter play.
But the Jaguars rallied quickly on their next drive, when Lawrence connected with wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley on an one-handed, diving catch over cornerback Jarrian Jones to score 13 yards for an equalizer and tie the game at 17-17. That set off a 10-play, 76-yard drive which culminated with Lawrence throwing an 11-yard touchdown pass to Travis Etienne (71 yards on the ground).
Second half was quiet as both teams traded punts and went three-and-out on their final drives, yet Cincinnati’s defense managed to keep Jaguars off the field long enough for Browning’s victory-clining run. Linebacker Devin Lloyd made an interception that helped stop one of Jacksonville’s fourth quarter drives while safety Eric Murray added one as well.
Injury Report
After falling to Cleveland in their opener, the Bengals remain fully healthy heading into Sunday’s home matchup against Jacksonville. Offensive tackle Amarius Mims (ankle) had limited practice sessions throughout this week but according to head coach Zac Taylor is “good to go”. Defensive lineman BJ Hill also saw limited practice but will be available against Jacksonville.
The Jaguars got off to a quick start on their opening drive, highlighted by running back Dyami Brown’s seven-yard touchdown run. Their strong rushing attack continued during their second drive; rookie running back Bhayshul Tuten’s 42-yard touchdown run was capped off an eight-play, 77-yard drive. That score gave them a 7-0 advantage with 10:51 remaining in the first quarter.
However, their momentum was short-lived as two interceptions and a turnover in the red zone led to 10 Bengals points on four consecutive Bengals possessions, drawing level with 17-17 before Lawrence threw two touchdown passes – to Mitchell Tinsley and Etienne respectively – that gave his team an unexpected 24-17 advantage with just 4:08 remaining in the third quarter.
At the conclusion of the first half, rookie cornerback Travis Hunter committed a 25-yard pass interference penalty when covering wide receiver Andre Iosavis on fourth down from the Bengals 33-yard line on fourth-and-5 from fourth down, leading to Little kicking a 23-yard field goal and then Joe Burrow scoring on one yard touchdown run with just 18 seconds remaining to give his team their first lead of the second half and set off an exciting finish, where Lawrence threw three more touchdown passes while making key defensive stops on opposing drives to seal victory and ensured his team victory over Jacksonville Jaguars.
