Blake Bortles
Blake Bortles began the season competing against three other quarterbacks for starting duties before eventually taking control. Though initially ineffective, his performance increased throughout the year until he finally ranked 17th in both touchdown passes and passing yards at season’s end.
He had some sub-200-yard games, yet still produced some truly spectacular ones. For example, against the Patriots he threw for 377 yards and four touchdowns while posting an incredible 124.7 rating and career high of 401 yards against them.
The Jaguars had struggled defensively in recent weeks, but their performance against the 49ers saw a notable improvement. They registered one sack and allowed only one first-half touchdown; their defense is expected to further advance throughout the season.
Even after losing their opening two games of the season, the Jaguars remain in an excellent position to make a playoff run. Just a game behind first place in AFC South with an unblemished record against division rivals, they remain poised to advance further than expected in this campaign.
On Sunday, the Jaguars defeated the San Francisco 49ers 26-21 at Levi’s Stadium. Although this contest was close, Jaguars defensive and special team performances ultimately contributed to their win.
At one point in the first quarter, the Jaguars took an early lead following a quick drive that resulted in Travis Etienne scoring from 48 yards out for a 48-yard touchdown run. Kicker Eddy Pineiro then kicked a 23-yard field goal to make it 7-3 going into halftime.
From there on out, their defense held off the 49ers offense for most of the game; forcing three turnovers which included an interception from Jamal Adams and fumble recovery by linebacker Avery Williams respectively – winning three consecutive games after losing to their opening week rival Texans; their largest road win against any opponent since 1999!
Travis Etienne Jr.
The Jaguars’ offense dominated against the 49ers on Monday, but their defense did their part to make sure the game wouldn’t turn into an outright loss. Their efforts allowed just one touchdown while creating four takeaways and forcing two turnovers – impressive feats nonetheless; unfortunately it wasn’t enough to overcome such an accomplished opponent as San Francisco.
The Jaguars defense has been stellar this season. Leading the NFL in takeaways and contributing greatly to their 3-1 start, their takeaways lead all NFL clubs and resulted in three takeaways and a defensive touchdown on Sunday alone! Safety Andrew Wingard recovered a first-quarter fumble while cornerback Devin Lloyd intercepted two passes; Arik Armstead made an impactful contribution by strip-sacking former team mates!
Corey Grant provided another big play for the Jaguars by returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown – his fourth kickoff return this season and leading all returners with 206 yards returned so far this year.
Blake Bortles made an immediate impactful debut for the Jaguars by throwing for 228 yards and two touchdowns against the Colts, earning himself one of only 10 spots among all NFL quarterbacks with more than 1,000 passing yards this year.
On the offensive side of things, running back Travis Etienne made an impressionful impactful mark for Jacksonville this game. The former Louisiana State University standout compiled 115 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns; adding Etienne could further enhance Jacksonville’s formidable rushing attack that is one of the best in the league this season.
The Jaguars will have an opportunity to improve their win-loss record against the 49ers this week at Levi’s Stadium. Fresh off a bye week, their offensive output should benefit against an unimpressive 49ers defense.
With a victory against the 49ers on Sunday, the Jaguars would take an important step toward winning their third division crown in five seasons and becoming perennial playoff contenders. Conversely, should they fail to do so, losing records could resurface for the first time since 2008 and lessen their chances of reaching Super Bowl 50.
Marquise Goodwin
Marquise Goodwin is an exceptional wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers, who is adept at running routes efficiently and making contested catches even in traffic. Additionally, Goodwin boasts strong kickoff return capabilities and can serve as a deep threat – evidenced by his 57-yard touchdown catch against Chicago Bears. Goodwin is someone any quarterback would rely on during an emergency situation.
Goodwin excelled on special teams as a rookie and started all 14 games as both wide receiver and special teams player last year. He recorded 27 catches for 291 yards while being honored as the team’s Most Productive Special Teams Player. Goodwin demonstrated an improved route tree during the last four games, creating numerous plays downfield.
Goodwin also competes in track and field. He won two national college long jump titles during college competition, representing his nation at both the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships and 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
Goodwin displays an admirable work ethic and eagerness to learn. His teammates appreciate his consistent effort on every play; furthermore, Goodwin will continue his development into an elite wideout in the NFL.
Goodwin remains an integral component of the 49ers offense despite his injury issues and will serve as one of the team’s key targets against the Texans this week. He will aim to build upon recent strong performances and return some of the form that made him one of the top-10 wide receivers back in 2021.
Devin Lloyd
The Jaguars struck gold when they acquired linebacker Devin Lloyd via free agency. Lloyd has much to offer his new team’s defense; he can play multiple positions and poses a big-play threat in coverage; his interceptions demonstrate soft hands which indicate his quarterback reading ability; this versatile player can be utilized by coaching staff in numerous ways making him an extremely valuable commodity.
Lloyd was a standout during his rookie year, earning defensive rookie of the month honors for September 2022. With 115 total tackles, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and eight passes defended he earned himself a place on the Pro Football Writers Association All-Rookie team and later on becoming an alternate Pro Bowl selection in 2023 – tied fourth most tackler overall!
Takeaway of the game was accomplished when Andrew Wingard forced a safety against Luke Farrell of the 49ers on their opening drive of the second quarter, leading to a 7-3 Jaguars lead with 14 minutes left in the quarter and Travis Etienne Jr’s 48-yard run score to extend it further; kicker Eddy Pineiro cut this deficit down to one point before Cam Little kicked a 26-yard field goal at halftime to make it 17-6 at breaktime.
The Jaguars defense was strong, while special teams played a critical role. What really set them apart though was their turnover-force dominance – forcing four turnovers, including Lloyd’s 99-yard pick six which was franchise history at that point!
Overall it was an outstanding effort from Jacksonville as they demonstrated they could beat an elite opponent even in difficult conditions such as Detroit Stadium. Now 3-1 themselves they face Oakland Raiders next Sunday at home!
