QB Bryce Young

JACKSONVILLE — Finally, after much anticipation, the Jaguars finally took to EverBank Stadium on Sunday to kickoff their 2025 campaign – and while they lost to Carolina 26-10, this day proved positive in many aspects – particularly thanks to an outstanding running back performance by Brian Thomas Jr. and a powerful defense that forced turnovers throughout.

The Jaguars opened up their game with a 35-yard Cam Little field goal that would stand as their initial lead in this matchup. Later in the second quarter, Lawrence completed three passes to tight end Brenton Strange for 49 yards on a 13-play, 91-yard drive that culminated with Hunter Long scoring on a six-yard touchdown pass and giving his team an 11-3 advantage midway through the second quarter; four plays later Thomas would score on an nine-yard touchdown run to give them a 17-3 halftime advantage.

Bryce Young led the Panthers offense with 154 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions during this loss. Young was highly effective on quick passes (under 2.5 seconds), completing 11 out of 15 attempts for 92 yards and scoring once (+1.0 CPOE). Unfortunately, however, when required to execute more complex passing sequences he faltered significantly and finished at -0.5 CPOE against expectations.

Tetairoa McMillan finished with 68 receiving yards – third-most ever by any Panthers rookie making their debut – and tied for team lead in receptions alongside Xavier Legette and Hunter Renfrow. Meanwhile, Safety Tre’von Moehrig recorded 200th career tackle while Corner Mike Jackson achieved 150 solo stops during his inaugural NFL game; linebacker Foyesade Oluokun registered both a sack and forced fumble.

RB Tetairoa McMillan

The Panthers employed an efficient passing game and targeted an abundance of receivers, including 2023 rookie Rashaad McMillan. While McMillan led his team with 68 catches for 805 yards this season, his inconsistency in red zone plays has caused problems; though he did catch touchdown passes in each of the past two games he only scored once this year. Panthers expect him to continue improving next season; watching their connection will make for an intriguing narrative storyline.

McMillan made his presence felt on Carolina’s opening drive by reeling in an 11-yard reception, only to drop another pass and be limited to just 13 receiving yards in the second quarter (that being his career low for receptions in any game). This marked the only instance when McMillan had less than 20 yards receiving in this contest.

Early in the second quarter, Jaguars kicker Cam Little scored two field goals to give his team a 10-3 advantage and they never looked back. Tight end Hunter Long caught a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback David Lawrence during their next drive before linebacker Foyesade Oluokun returned a fumble by Young for another score.

The Jaguars defense was dominant throughout the remainder of the second half, as safety Eric Murray and cornerback Jourdan Lewis’ two sacks prevented Carolina from scoring. They already forced three turnovers by forcing mistakes during the first half, and this trend continued in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Lawrence hit another 40-yard field goal to extend their lead and give them a 23-3 edge. Running back Derrick Brown added another score late with an 11-yard run before Young connected with McMillan for a 22-yard touchdown that marked his longest of the year – five catches for 78 yards overall and being on the field 73 percent of time (which is considered high workload for running backs). Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Musgrave believes in McMillan and plans on giving him even more chances to shine against Jaguars opponents in 2018.

WR Xavier Legette

The 2024 Carolina Panthers season kicked off with an eye-catching mix of rookie receiver talent. Tetairoa McMillan and Xavier Legette look poised to have significant impacts this year; however, Darren Fells may emerge as their standout performer.

Fells is an effective red zone threat who has caught three touchdown passes this year. He also excels at creating separation and managed two of the Panthers’ three longest receptions in Week 10.

Fells was limited by injury for much of the first half, catching only four passes for 42 yards before his breakout performance after the bye week when he caught five passes for 70 yards in five receptions and is on track to pass 1000 receiving yards for the first time ever in his career and is the only Panthers rookie who has reached 100 receiving yards this season.

The Panthers have struggled throughout this season, yet their secondary has been one of their shining points. Allowing only one passing touchdown all season long shows just how capable their defense could be in being one of the top-10 units in the NFL.

Cam Little scored two first-half field goals to give the Jaguars a 17-3 lead over the Panthers by halftime. Lawrence’s six-yard touchdown pass to tight end Hunter Long opened scoring, eight plays after Foyesade Oluokun recorded a fumble recovery and interception of Young pass in second quarter by Oluokun; later Jourdan Lewis returned a fumble for touchdown return late in half.

The Jaguars defense is built around pressuring opposing quarterbacks, and several of its members could emerge as breakout stars this season. Safety Tre’von Moehrig recently recorded 200 tackles while defensive end A’Shawn Robinson added two sacks and one quarterback hit. Mike Jackson led their defensive backfield with 150 solo tackles as well as pass breakups and forced fumbles over the weekend.

WR Hunter Renfrow

Renfrow led his Panther teammates with 48 snaps on offense and two-thirds of their receiving plays, serving as Bryce Young’s go-to target catching eight passes for 84 yards and three touchdowns en route to being named team MVP. Renfrow was also an indispensable blocker, tied for team leadership with seven total blocks.

Lawrence caught Carolina’s inaugural touchdown pass of the game – a six-yarder to tight end Hunter Long that gave them an early 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter, just prior to a rain delay. On their next drive, running back Traivon Etienne scored on one yard following Lawrence’s 71-yard catch; Little’s 35-yard field goal made it 17-3 by halftime.

Renfrow was an important contributor during the second half, catching a 27-yard pass from Young and scoring on an 11-yard reception off a 59-yard screen play. On defense, Renfrow recorded two tackles (one solo) and his second forced fumble of his career; safety A’Shawn Robinson added two quarterback hits and pass breakups while cornerback Mike Jackson overcame 150 solo tackles on the season with 150 total solo tackles as well as one sack recorded.
