ODIs
Australia men’s cricket team will square off with an industrious West Indies side in an ODI series from 25 January to 6 February 2024, beginning with Gabba Stadium in Brisbane before moving onto Sydney Cricket Ground and Adelaide Oval for matches.
Australia have won an overwhelming 79 out of 146 ODI matches against West Indies while their visitors have only managed to claim 61 wins overall; additionally there have been three matches that ended in ties.
Shamar Joseph’s remarkable spell powered the West Indies to their first Test win on Australian soil since 1997. The match was an intense contest throughout, and neither side could fully exert control.
Joseph took six wickets in each innings for West Indies victory – now just one behind Dennis Lillee’s record of 329 Test wickets! Meanwhile, opener David Warner became only the ninth T20I player ever to reach 300 wickets in just nine games!
T20Is
These two matches mark the start of a series which will lead to next year’s World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, but also represent an endpoint:
Andre Russell has announced his intention to retire from international cricket following these two matches, to be replaced in West Indies side by Jemimah Andrew, Jediah Blades who were recently called up, Matthew Forde as replacement for injured Matt Short, while Australia are not at full strength with Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood all rested for this series so Mitchell Marsh will lead them through these matches.
Tests
Australia and West Indies will meet in a three-test series, with the winner set to reclaim the Frank Worrell Trophy. Australia are going into this series with some questions regarding their top order where Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have both struggled for form; but can depend on Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood’s impressive bowling for support as they look to assert themselves back on top.
The Tests will take place at three venues – The Gabba in Brisbane, St George’s in Grenada and Sabina Park in Kingston Jamaica where a one-wicket win for West Indies remains fresh in memory.
While Sabina Park will play host to its maiden Test match ever, St George’s and St George’s in Grenada have hosted seven ODIs and one T20I during Australia’s 2007 World Cup victory and will therefore provide familiarity for Australia.
Since their last home Test victory against Australia 22 years ago, the Windies have enjoyed four out of their most recent five Caribbean tours, with Roseau and Kingston wins during 2015 tour being notable victories. Furthermore, they’ve managed two away wins against Australia; first at Jamaica (2-1 win in 2022), then at Antigua Recreation Ground with 3-1 scoreline victory this January.
Both teams will look to build on the successes they enjoyed in T20Is, won by Australia 3-0 and West Indies 2-0 respectively. Unfortunately for West Indies fans, however, their recent poor record in ODIs has proved costly as they lost four consecutive matches this season and must find consistency quickly or else face further consequences in 2019.
