ODIs
One Day Internationals (ODIs) are limited-overs cricket matches played between teams of international status. As the highest standard in List A limited-overs competition, these matches serve as the precursor for major tournaments, such as the World Cup. These ODIs are administered by the International Cricket Council.
In One Day Internationals (ODIs), fielding restrictions are placed on the bowling side during each innings. Only attacking fields may be set during the initial 10 overs of each innings; while in the last 10 overs all three types of fielding may be used; these are represented on modern scorecards by fielding position indicators P1, P2 and P3.
Pakistan and South Africa have met in 87 ODIs since 2022, with Pakistan winning 34 times and South Africa 52. Since the start of 2022, these teams have held 18 matches;
12 took place in South Africa while eight were played in Pakistan – their last encounter being in Lahore on 14 September, which Pakistan won by 8 wickets thanks to Aliya Riaz scoring 351 runs including three half centuries while spinner Nashra Sundhu took 16 wickets at an economy rate of 3.91!
T20Is
Next week in South Africa will see three matches between Pakistan and South Africa, who both finished runners-up at recent ICC T20 World Cups (2024 and 2022 respectively).
Both have struggled since their respective appearances in the final, with South Africa being defeated 3-1 at home by India while Pakistan were limited to only two other games — a 2-1 draw in Zimbabwe and an outright loss against Ireland – since their respective final appearances.
Heinrich Klaasen will aim to reverse South Africa’s recent slump when they face Pakistan under stand-in captain Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, respectively.
Azam has returned after being rested during Asia Cup play; this decision by selectors signals their move away from youth experiments which have not produced results.
South Africa will have to adjust without Test regular Aiden Markram, who has been rested along with Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada and Tristan Stubbs for white-ball competition.
Rob Walter will rely on fast bowler Anrich Nortje and spinner Tabraiz Shamsi as replacements in aiding South African attacks in place of injured Markram.
Each team has met in 24 T20Is, with South Africa winning 12 matches to the visitors’ 10 wins. The series begins on Tuesday in Lahore before two more T20Is will take place at Johannesburg between Thursday and Sunday with South Africa hoping for a clean sweep before playing three ODIs and one T20I in Ireland as preparation for the 2025 World Cup starting August.
