Tests
India and South Africa will compete in three Test matches from December 17 – 21. The games will take place at Wanderers, Gqebera and Paarl stadiums; providing India an essential opportunity to prepare for their forthcoming participation at ICC World Cup 2023.
South Africa beat India in their last Test series by an emphatic 2-1 margin, marking an outstanding rise for Shaun Pollock and Graeme Smith-led Proteas as one of the finest teams worldwide. South Africa now hold a remarkable head-to-head ODI match record against India; winning 50 out of 90 head-to-head encounters between themselves and India since 2009.
India will make their inaugural visit to South Africa since their triumphant 2-1 triumph at the ICC T20 World Cup Final last year, giving young players such as Suryakumar Yadav the chance to prove themselves and cement themselves into India’s core group moving forward. Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh will all play key roles for India during this series.
India will be without Gautam Gambhir due to a back injury; VVS Laxman will act as stand-in coach and pace bowlers Mayank Yadav and Shivam Dube will miss out from their squad.
South Africa meanwhile will miss captain AB de Villiers along with Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi; yet remain an exceptional side and pose a great test to the Men in Blue.
ODIs
The Proteas, also known as South Africa National Cricket Team, are South Africa’s men’s international cricket team and represent them internationally in men’s cricket matches.
Administered by Cricket South Africa and with Test and One-Day International (ODI) status granted by International Cricket Council. Their name derives from South African heritage symbol, protea (Protea cynaroides).
After the dismantling of apartheid in 1991, South Africa were readmitted into international cricket and played their first sanctioned match against India the same year. At first considered contenders for all major tournaments, their form has since faltered severely leading them down the path toward becoming known as ‘chokers’ in big events.
South Africa has produced some of the greatest players in cricket’s history. Batsman Jacques Kallis stands out among them; others including Allan Donald, Daryll Cullinan, Jonty Rhodes, Shaun Pollock Gary Kirsten and Graeme Smith have also graced international stages representing South Africa and Proteas respectively.
South Africa is widely respected for their fast and aggressive style of ODI cricket, featuring some key players that excel at this format – Faf du Plessis as captain, batsman David Miller and all-rounder AB de Villiers among them.
Team Ireland have reached the semi-finals of multiple ICC World Cups, but have failed to claim victory. New Zealand were controversially victorious over Ireland in 2003 after being disqualified from an eventful run chase due to rain-affected conditions; as well as this being their eighth World Cup loss they also fell at 1996, 1999, 2007 Champions Trophy tournaments before exiting in the quarter-finals or first round exit respectively.
Though struggling in recent times, South Africa remains one of the best sides in world cricket. They will hope to improve on their record when they take on India in a three-match ODI series commencing December 10.
In their previous ODI against India at St George’s Park South Africa lost by five wickets; being bowled out for 238 with Marsh Head and Cameron Green all scoring centuries.
T20Is
Virat Kohli played a significant role in India’s victory against South Africa during their T20I series at SuperSport Park. His innings was notable because it saw India average one run per ball during their initial quarter batting period; thanks to Kohli’s efforts this average rose significantly.
South Africa’s batting struggled against an effective Indian attack. Opening batsman Heinrich Klaasen fell victim to Jasprit Bumrah’s catch at point in the sixth over, sending their hosts reeling to 15/4 at powerplay’s end.
Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks fell quickly after, leaving South Africa struggling at 30/4 after 13 overs; Aiden Markram and David Miller held firm to help get South Africa past the target with six overs to spare.
After their loss against India at Gqeberha, South Africa were faced with an uphill task for their remaining two T20I games against them, so Coach Rob Walter has made adjustments in his side for these matches. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi will sit this one out while paceman Lutho Sipamla is joining for these encounters.
Though this may reduce the Proteas’ batting line-up strength, it should help improve their T20I bowling overall. Their spinners have performed poorly so far and could benefit from additional support from Henrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen.
The Proteas have won three T20I matches against India so far, and will hope to extend this winning streak when the three and final T20I takes place at St George’s Park on Sunday.
Led by Aiden Markram and featuring quick bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi as well as emerging batters Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen among their bowling options, South African cricket hopes they can continue this winning streak and secure another victory at St George’s Park on Sunday.

Additionally, both teams played a bilateral three-match series last year that ended up 1-1; India eventually took home victory during their initial meeting which went all the way until its conclusion with India winning in an exciting last over contest.
India scored 177-7 after Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. Virat Kohli made history, becoming one of the leading run scorers and winning player of match honors at this tournament.

South Africa made a late push, taking the lead in the final over, only to fall short against India’s daunting total of 175. Heinrich Klaasen made 52 off 27 balls but Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh took four wickets each to give India an easy seven-run win in an exciting final matchup.
Both teams will meet again for a three-match T20 series beginning December 10 at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. It will provide the new-look Indian side an excellent opportunity to test themselves against an excellent opponent.
MS Dhoni returns as skipper of India’s ODIs while Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are set to make their international debuts during this series, giving youngster another opportunity to claim their position among India’s core group of international players.
