Points table
Lucknow Super Giants (PSG) are a professional Twenty20 cricket team from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh in India competing in the Indian Premier League. Owned by the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and playing its home matches at Ekana Cricket Stadium since 2022. Reaching playoffs twice but falling to fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Punjab Kings have shot up to second in the IPL points table after their convincing win over LSG, garnering four points and posting an impressive net run rate of +1.485. Their victory came about due to an excellent all-round effort led by Prabhsimran Singh and Arshdeep Singh’s efforts in restricting hosts LSG to 171/7; then an explosive 69 from David Miller saw them reach their target without difficulty.
Punjab have made great strides since their lackluster start to the season and can now look forward to an impressive finish of competition. They retained key players like Nicholas Pooran, Mohsin Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Ayush Badoni and Mayank Yadav prior to auction and hope that these performances continue into playoff stages.
RCB will be disappointed with their performance and now find themselves outside of the top four. Even after Tim David’s late blitz couldn’t overcome their deficit and they finished on 95/9 in 14 over per side innings.
Loss to Lucknow Super Giants has left Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with a negative net run rate of -0.469, making their road to playoffs even harder. Furthermore, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan will miss their services while recovering at the National Cricket Academy from injuries they sustained earlier in the season.
In their absence it will be crucial for them to step up their game as failure could mean failure for this season – they will get another opportunity when hosting Mumbai Indians next Tuesday when hosting them again – good luck to both teams!
Matches played
Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants convincingly at Dharamsala to record their second win of the IPL points table and move into second position behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru, cutting the deficit between themselves and Mumbai Indians by just two points and maintaining second spot overall on IPL points table.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad continue their attempts at maintaining playoff chances while losing several games themselves this season.
Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to bat first, setting Punjab Kings into bat with Prabhsimran’s exceptional performances taking them all the way to 236-5 off 20 overs. Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad both chipped in with vital runs quickly; Punjab King bowlers also performed admirably and hindered any run scoring efforts by their opposition; Arshdeep Singh took three wickets for Punjab Kings!
Punjab Kings were dominant on the field but struggled in their run chase due to early wicket losses, only managing a late surge of runs from Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad to secure two victories this season.
LSG have two extremely skilled batsmen in Miller and Samad, but their cause seems doomed compared to Punjab Kings’ formidable bowling unit. LSG need 166 runs off 66 balls if they want any chance against this formidable adversary.
Punjab Kings remain one of only four teams still competing for one of four top-four positions, and their impressive win against Lucknow Super Giants at Dharamsala has propelled them into second place on the points table, just two behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru but just a point ahead of Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders; thus setting up an exciting finish at the top. Due to damp pitch conditions in Dharamsala, teams may opt for some powerplay overs and possibly use this weather as an advantage over their opponents.
Matches won
On Sunday night, the Punjab Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 37 runs in an eventful match that featured many twists and turns. Rishabh Pant won the toss and sent Punjab into bat, where they quickly prevailed thanks to Prabhsimran Singh who provided an outstanding bowling display against both pace and spin bowling attacks from both teams.
Shreyas Iyer also performed splendidly to score an easy 30-ball fifty while Nehal Wadhera appeared once more after being left out during their previous game and looked like something special when given an opportunity.
The first three overs were almost scoreless; however, in the fourth and fifth overs there were several runs scored from each over. That is until Azmatullah Omarzai struck and all but won it: Samad hit one of Omarzai’s short wide deliveries over long on for six.
Samad continued his hitting spree with lofted cover drives off next ball for four, followed by an upper cut hit by Omarzai that flew past deep square leg! The game had officially ended!
Youngster Ajaz Afzal produced an outstanding innings that will leave everyone talking for some time to come. Afzal’s contributions will go down in history books as one of the highlights from this tournament and it seems he only continues to improve; unfortunately he wasn’t chosen for national selection.
LSG have an excellent chance at making the playoffs, but must quickly start winning games to do so. At 10 points from 11 and with a negative net run rate, qualifying will not come easily for them. Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings are already out while Sunrisers Hyderabad also face an uphill struggle to get qualified.

Matches lost
Punjab Kings have taken second place in the IPL 2025 standings after defeating LSG, just one point behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their win also puts pressure on Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad who still wish to qualify for playoffs.
RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group of companies owns and operates Ekana Cricket Stadium as its home ground, since 2010. Since 2010 and currently competing in the Indian Premier League, they have experienced fluctuating fortunes since their 2010 establishment, from an excellent debut season to poor ones since. Their worst period was 2014 when they were relegated from contention altogether before rebounding with six wins and 12 points during 2016.
Glenn Maxwell and David Miller had exceptional batting seasons but fell short in reaching past the semifinals. However, in 2014 they went one better winning 11 out of 14 league games but then going down in an exciting final to Rising Pune Supergiant where Shaun Marsh made an unforgettable comeback to international cricket.
KKR defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad earlier this year to move up into sixth position and remain competitive for a top-four finish, but there remain numerous hurdles standing in their way in order to reach the final. They lost against Delhi Daredevils earlier in 2018.
Punjab Kings must now focus on improving their batting. Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad are talented batsmen but are struggling to score runs consistently. Vijaykumar Vyshak’s short first ball was hit over long off by Samad for six; Badoni hit an exquisite lofted cover drive over long third for four and followed it up with an upper cut over short third for another four; now their target stands at 166 off 66 balls with Badoni needing another couple of boundaries from Badoni alone.
