India vs Sri Lanka
India and Sri Lanka women’s national cricket teams are more than two teams – they are fierce rivals that have provided fans with many thrilling moments over the years.
Meeting each other many times in one-day internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 internationals has created a fierce rivalry filled with exciting battles and memorable victories.
India opened their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign with a convincing win against Sri Lanka at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.
India restricted them to just 211 before rolling their opponents over in 47 overs courtesy of Amanjot Kaur’s unbeaten half century and Deepti Sharma taking three wickets as India set about dominating them from bowling to victory.
Early in the match, Sri Lanka struggled early and were reduced to 94 for 6 before starting to put up a fightback. Rumeli Dhar (2/41) and Gouher Sultana (2/22) ensured the hosts did not come close to India’s total; Deepika Rasangika led with 24 runs off 20 balls but was ultimately dismissed with an excellent yorker from Deepti.
India was led by Smriti Mandhana’s unbeaten score of 116 not out, powering her side to an overwhelming 342/7 in the final. Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, and Jemimah Rodrigues all contributed with runs as India battled through some early nerves when losing opener Chamari Athapaththu early. But India held their nerves until victory was assured with an innings victory against Sri Lanka by 97 runs.
The team has had an encouraging start to the tournament, but must improve upon their performances in their remaining matches. Batting must remain resilient while bowlers need to collect more wickets.
Sri Lanka have also made great strides as an entire team since South Africa and India were eliminated from Tri-Nation series in recent months, finishing as runners-up in this tournament against both sides. Young stars Vishmi Gunaratne and Pratika Dilhari have shown promise so far and look to improve further as matches progress; competition between India and Sri Lanka should only increase from here; their next game against each other will take place in Kolkata this Wednesday.
