CSK 230/5 (Ayush Mhatre 34, Devon Conway 57) beat GT 147 (Shahrukh Khan 47) by 83 runs
Gujarat Titans (GT) faced Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in what turned out to be one of the highest scoring matches of this season’s IPL, featuring Devon Conway and Dewald Brevis’ fifties that helped them post 230 in 20 overs at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad; CT’s loss ensured they remain top of the table – they can secure playoff spots by beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their final matchup on Sunday!
The clash was hyped as “Game of the Tournament,” and it lived up to expectations. Both sides saw excellent individual performers on display – particularly Ayush Mhatre, who hit four sixes in his debut match for Chennai Super Kings after being selected as a mid-season replacement player and showed that he has the potential to be an integral component next season.
CSK openers Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway made an explosive start, striking back against GT’s bowlers with bat and sharing an opening partnership of 68 in just the second over of this match, GT’s worst powerplay total of the season.
Following that, GT struggled to keep up with run rate; Ayush Mhatre became first victim off Prasidh Krishna when caught at midwicket by Prasidh Krishna while Brevis blasted three sixes to leave them reeling at 147-3 in 12 over.
However, the lower order showed resilience by holding their nerve and fighting back with Sherfane Rutherford (28 off 17) and Shahrukh Khan (47) providing key contributions that reduced their deficit to 75 runs – but failed to capitalise upon these successes and were eventually defeated chasteningly.
Established in 2022, the Gujarat Titans are a professional Twenty20 cricket team from Ahmedabad that compete in the Indian Premier League.
Owned by Torrent Group and CVC Capital Partners and led by captain Shubman Gill. The Ahmedabad Titans host their home games at Narendra Modi Stadium. Since debuting in 2022, they have won four times and been runners-up on three other occasions; under Ashish Nehra as coach.
The Titans have enjoyed a longstanding rivalry with Mumbai Indians and have won 5 out of 8 encounters between them. Additionally, they have seen three victories against Rajasthan Royals since joining IPL – something which only served to heighten tensions when former RR players joined GT resulting in even more intense matches between both teams.
CSK won the toss and elected to bat first.
CSK were dominant across all aspects of their match against GT as they crushed them by an emphatic 83 run margin.
CSK put on one of their finest performances from all season with both bat and ball while their bowlers absolutely decimated GT from start to finish.
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan at GT opened with an outstanding 210 run partnership that took the game away from hosts India and provided them with an unshakeable base to build upon.
Once CSK had lost both players, it was relatively straightforward for CSK to build momentum in their innings; Ayush Mhatre set off quickly in the powerplay while Devon Conway scored an excellent half century that ensured their target was met easily. Brevis Behare then hit an explosive 57 to finish off their innings off successfully.
However, the middle order crumbled with Rachin Ravindra and Ajinkya Rahane falling to easy catches, Moeen Ali and Daryl Mitchell trying to stop this slide but failing.
Noor Ahmed, Kamboj and Jadeja’s bowlers then rose to the challenge and dismissed GT for just 147 runs – with each taking three wickets each – while GT struggled at bat, bowl and field to make any significant impact – perhaps signalling that their hopes for playoff contention may soon be lost.
CSK delivered an exceptional performance to close out their season. They jumped from fourth place to third and will await the results of RCB-MI to determine whether they can secure a top two finish.
Unfortunately, Jos Buttler suffered an injury and they will need to wait for him to recover before making their playoff preparations – however the team are expected to announce his replacement on Thursday.
CSK won the toss and elected to bowl first.
MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl first against an opposition that had come under his captaincy previously. His goal was to initiate some consistent batting and powerplay bowling performances from his side; replacing Shaik Rasheed with Jamie Overton while also recruiting Lungi Ngidi into their ranks.
CSK made the right decision in bowling out GT for just 147. Ayush Mhatre made an impactful 34 in the powerplay, Devon Conway and Urvil Patel also reached 50, with Brevis making his presence known with an amazing 57 from CSK’s innings as they finished with 230/5 on board.
GT’s reply struggled from the outset and lost Jos Buttler in just the second over. Shahrukh Khan and Sai Sudharshan’s partnership was promising but as runs dried up quickly it looked as though GT might remain at the bottom of the table.
However, GT had hope as their middle order did a fine job of controlling run rate and relieving scoreboard pressure.
Unfortunately for them though, Jadeja, Noor Ahmed and Pathirana kept chipping in with wickets to thwart any further comeback attempts from GT.
Unfortunately for them though, it was too little too late as they suffered their second loss of the season and fell down to fourth place – waiting on the result of RCB-LSG match up in order to know their playoff fate and avoid facing wooden spoon. Meanwhile defending champions will relish finishing campaign on a high note!
