England vs. Australia
An encounter between England and Australia in cricket can be fiercely competitive. They have met six times so far; England having won three and tied two.
Travis Head’s second century of the series gave Australia an advantage on day three as they closed on 356-5 with four wickets still intact.
England were initially in trouble after Jake Weatherald fell for an lbw decision but should have challenged it since Brydon Carse’s ball pitched outside its line.
Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes put on an outstanding partnership before Usman Khawaja and Cameron Green were dismissed consecutively in successive overs.
The Barmy Army is an informal group of English cricket fans that travel with their team on overseas tours to provide crowd support. It first gained recognition during the 1994- 1995 Ashes tour in Australia when their loud cheering gave England its “mojo,” even when almost certain defeat was imminent.
1st Test
England and Australia men’s cricket teams have long held Test match series between each other; every fourth year each country hosts its own series.
The inaugural Test took place in Melbourne on 15 March 1877 at Melbourne Cricket Ground; it ended in victory for Australia; this remarkable contest is considered to be one of the greatest matches ever seen during an Ashes series.
Once again, Australian cricket was in their grasp with dominating victories over England under Warwick Armstrong’s fast bowlers such as Jack Gregory and Ted McDonald dominating their matches and devastating the English batting on multiple occasions.
England made an impressive comeback and won the Second Test at Lord’s, but lost three rain-affected Tests en route to taking an unfavorable 2-1 series lead against Australia. A draw in the fifth Test ensured it could go down to one final Test match at The Oval to decide the fate of this series.
This series was an incredible test of both teams’ talent. England had a formidable squad with Len Hutton as captain, Denis Compton, Fred Trueman and Peter May batsmen; Jim Laker and Alec Bedser bowlers; while Australia boasted several star players such as Charles Bannerman (first runs, first century).
The match is well-known for an extraordinary incident during its opening innings when Bill Johnston was hit on the head by a bouncer ball and caused a dispute between umpires and crowd, prompting riot police to intervene to break up any fights between players; when umpires announced they were stopping play altogether it triggered outrage among many in attendance, leading to what has since become known as “Birdseye”, an iconic moment synonymous with bad behaviour during cricket matches.
This match is also famous for the legendary Ian Botham’s performance during England’s second innings chase of 356, when he scored an extraordinary 149 runs – the highest individual score ever achieved in any Test innings!
Bob Willis took 8-43 wickets during this innings. Botham still holds the record for highest individual innings score ever achieved during a Test innings.
2nd Test
Every sport has a defining rivalry – football has Brazil v Argentina, rugby union has the All Blacks against South Africa and cricket has The Ashes – started by a small urn and newspaper line in 1882, this contest has come to symbolize not just runs and wickets but history, culture and identity among two nations tied by empire and language but separated by sporting competition.
At Lord’s, England was always going to find this Test hard fought; yet Australia won it nonetheless! Not since 1954 had Australia won in England! This contest proved intense.
England batted throughout the fourth morning to put themselves into an advantageous position, yet were ultimately undone by poor strokeplay on a bouncy Gabba pitch and some unhelpful bowling from Starc. Although Michael Vaughan made a career-best 98 score at number three bat, his resistance wasn’t enough against Starc’s impressive 77 at nine bat.
But this match also saw a brilliant English team, led by batsmen Len Hutton and Denis Compton and bowlers Fred Trueman, Alec Bedser, Jim Laker and Tony Lock, return with renewed strength. These legends included Godfrey Evans as wicket-keeper as well as Ian Botham who scored his final international century and five-wicket haul on this tour.
England will be keen to demonstrate they can compete on Australian soil once more, though preparations haven’t gone smoothly.
Darren Lehmann replaced Mickey Arthur as coach, while Ricky Ponting and Steve Smith have both suffered injuries preventing them from opening the batting lineup.
With Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood not available from Australia’s attack, England may face difficult match conditions in Sydney but hope will still exist thanks to Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes’ aggressive style of cricket which provides hope of victory for England.
3rd Test
England have now lost 18 away Ashes Tests without victory since 2002 and Australia have taken a 3-0 lead after just three days. A batting line-up weakened by injury – especially among openers David Warner and Ricky Ponting – failed to put up any resistance.
Marnus Labuschagne’s stunning catch halted England’s fightback, but they could still take comfort in making what Stuart Broad had called “the worst Australian team since England won the 2010-11 series” look amateurish.
On a day full of near misses, Alex Carey and Travis Head both were denied an innings victory by England’s fragile top order, who failed to post enough runs in either innings they started.
England’s batsmen were equally frustrated with Australia’s bowling, especially Starc and Josh Hazlewood who caused numerous issues to England’s batsmen.
Finally they were put into their place when Brook missed an off-cutter from Scott Boland that could easily have gone for four runs.
Australia’s frontline spinner took over after Tea and sent down five consecutive dot balls without striking Root before one hit him on the outside edge of his bat – though Root would respond with his second 50 of the match quickly to help stabilise England and repair damage already done.
England began the final session chasing 349 to win, but their hopes of making an early comeback were swiftly dashed when Jofra Archer made a costly mistake at point, spilling a ball from Jake Weatherald at point for their 200th wicket of the match – soon leading them on their path towards an innings victory for their hosts.
Tom Curran then made the decisive slip catch which gave Labuschagne his third wicket and left England regretting what might have been. Australia now have an astonishing 16 matches unbeaten record against England since their first tour back in 2021; their series win will go down as one of the greatest series victories ever witnessed by Ashes history.
