Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh – 1st Test

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka share a longstanding rivalry, meeting 108 times in Test matches between them and Bangladesh winning 77 of them with one draw.

They have also competed in many ODI and T20 internationals with Bangladesh winning more often. Both nations have taken part in major tournaments like World Cup and Champions Trophy without ever being victorious in either.

Bangladesh had every chance of victory in Colombo during the first Test but failed to capitalize. Sri Lanka’s superior bowling performance and outstanding batting display ensured they never really challenged Bangladesh in this contest.

Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal both struck century-plus opening stands, before Kusal Mendis made an unbeaten 81 in the second innings for Sri Lanka. But their opponents from Bangladesh made them work, as Nayeem Hasan and Taijul Islam bowled some devastating spinnery that held off.

With four wickets taken off them by Nayeem Hasan alone; then Taijul Islam ended his burst taking four scalps including an excellent return catch from Taijul Islam!

This game marked Angelo Mathews’ exit from international cricket after 119 tests for Bangladesh. After falling for eight, caught off his bat-pad, all Bangladesh players gave their congratulations for his final appearance in whites.

Sri Lankan spinners proved key, with Rajitha, Dhammika Prasanna and Shehan Madushanka taking many wickets. Bangladesh batsmen struggled to adapt to Sri Lanka’s pace and bounce; when asked to follow on they came under significant pressure.

Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh – 2nd Test

Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 78 runs in Colombo’s 2nd Test to take an early 1-0 series lead. Led by captain Dinesh Chandimal and wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka produced a dominant performance at home to secure an emphatic win with four more wickets from Sri Lanka’s spinners taking four on Day 3, and ultimately closing out an impressive win by an innings and 78 runs.

Bangladesh were unable to keep pace with the score as they were bowled out for just 133 in their first innings after winning the toss on day 1.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das gave valiant performances at bat, yet even this could not prevent a crushing defeat; nevertheless they can take heart in having improved throughout this series.

Before the Test series wraps up on June 5, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will likely play several one-day internationals and T20Is to continue their preparations.

Bangladesh will look to improve upon their poor ODI record against Sri Lanka – who have won seven straight matches under this format – while Sri Lanka aim to remain on top.

Though both teams have had less-than-stellar results in recent ODI and T20I matches, both remain highly competitive when it comes to Test cricket. Both sides have faced each other 108 times over this longer format format with Sri Lanka taking an edge with 77 wins to Bangladesh’s 23 victories.

Rivalry between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka dates back to their days as British colonies. Diplomatic relations were officially established between them in 1972 when Sri Lanka opened a High Commission in Dhaka.

Both nations share strong sporting ties as well as cultural and socioeconomic similarities; all Heads of State or Government from both nations have visited each other over time.

Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh – 3rd Test

Sri Lanka completely dominated the third Test at Galle and completed their three-Test series 3-0. They defeated Bangladesh by an innings and 193 runs; only three other teams have done it previously. Murali took his 700th wicket of the series, earning himself Man of the Match honors in this impressive win.

Bangladesh’s batsmen struggled to meet the required run rate. Both openers were dismissed for single figures while their middle order crumbled quickly before Mahmudullah and Litton Das fought hard in defence of their side’s face, though spinners continued their dominance by employing both pace and variety in their spin bowling attacks.

Bangladesh made significant improvements on their performance from their performance in the second Test despite defeat. Their top order remains an issue, so they must establish consistency if they wish to compete effectively at the highest levels of cricket.

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh share an extensive history of sporting interaction, having competed in 108 matches between them with Sri Lanka winning 77 to 23 wins over Bangladesh. Furthermore, they met three times at the ICC World Cup and six ODIs;

Bangladesh never managed a win though they did reach quarterfinals of two Champions Trophy tournaments and an ICC T20 World Cup tournament; Sri Lanka have won three senior level ICC trophies while their counterparts in Bangladesh remain winless; they also hold several bilateral agreements between themselves.

Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh – 4th Test

What had seemed a batting paradise had an abrupt shift on Day Four in Galle, when the pitch suddenly challenged batters.

In particular, during the afternoon session when it appeared to slow down significantly and allowed Bangladesh’s bowlers an opportunity to make inroads – offspinner Nayeem Hasan from Bangladesh made most inroads with five wickets taken off him in just 16 overs.

Anamul Haque and Shadman Islam made a steady start for Bangladesh with a partnership of 40. After his first innings duck had put him under pressure, Shadman Islam looked poised to build on that form and reach his sixth Test half century; unfortunately though he soon fell victim to Mahmudullah when attempting a sweep off Taskin Ahmed and being caught at short cover by Mahmudullah.

Nuwan Thushara then struck, dismissing Tanzid Hasan Tamim for a golden duck after misjudging a full toss which hit him on the pads and hit the stumps – it was an embarrassing start for hosts, who are currently trailing by 187 runs with seven wickets remaining in hand.

Mushfiqur Rahim hit four sixes to reach his second Test century and give Bangladesh a comfortable lead. At 38 years old and having played in 97 Test matches so far, Rahim silenced critics with an innings full of poise and purpose, being helped along by debutant Tharindu Rathnayake spilling a difficult chance on 25, before later deflecting off a lofted drive at short leg before scampering away for one single to move onto 94 not out and secure his team victory with early wickets if possible in the final session.

Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh – 5th Test

As the opening Full-Member-versus-Full-Member match of the tournament, this one should really turn up the heat. As it features two of the lower ranked teams in competition, any of them losing could face difficulty making the Super Four.

Mustafizur Rahman bowls the second over for Bangladesh and gets off to an excellent start, striking two blows early with Pathum Nissanka being caught behind after mis-timing an inside edge off an outswinging fuller delivery that dipped and turned.

He takes another wicket with the following delivery, when Kusal Mendis nibbled an away-nipper that fizzed across and hit Litton Das at point for one run-out to give Bangladesh 13 for 1 after an exciting powerplay over.

Nayeem Hasan then completed a double-sweep for the hosts by trapping Lahiru Udara at slip off an in-cutter that had nibbled into his pads, before taking another wicket with Dinesh Chandimal caught at short midwicket off a skidding off-break delivery.

Mathews then bid farewell to Test cricket with another memorable moment as he is dismissed for 8 off bat-pad, as every Bangladesh player made their way towards him as he left the ground. It’s a fitting farewell after nearly 15 years of unflinching excellence felt by generations of Sri Lanka fans – thank you Mathews, you will be greatly missed.
