Bangladesh vs New Zealand
Bangladesh Cricket Board administers and sponsors the national cricket team of Bangladesh. Since joining the International Cricket Council (ICC) as full member in 2000, they have played Test and One Day International matches regularly.
Bangladesh Cricket team is based out of Dhaka and led by Mashrafe Mortaza. Recognised as one of the premier teams worldwide, Bangladesh have achieved notable victories such as winning ICC Trophy 2014-15 season as well as qualifying for 2016 ICC Champions Trophy tournament and also participating in 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup where they finished eighth out of 16 groups stage.
Bangladesh is an extremely competitive nation, and their cricket team has won a series of notable titles over recent years. Led by notable players such as Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, and Mushfiqur Rahim among others; as well as several promising young talent.
Bangladesh remains relatively underdeveloped despite these successes, yet remains unable to break into the upper ranks of both ODI and T20I rankings, but continues to make strides forward with its development. Bangladesh stands a good chance of taking its next step toward growth.
In March 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board appointed former New Zealand coach Richard Pybus as its new two-year head coach after Shane Jurgensen had left due to personal reasons.
Bangladesh experienced poor results in the 2012-13 ICC World Twenty20 tournament and as a result hired former Pakistan national team manager Dav Whatmore as its interim head coach – later officially taking on that position for good – replacing Shakib Al Hasan who had held that post since 2010.
Bangladesh achieved their greatest victory to date in November 2017 when they defeated Sri Lanka in a three-match Test series, marking both their inaugural overseas Test series victory as well as first win ever at Eden Gardens in Dhaka (and setting an all-time score record at that venue).
ODI Series
In April and May, New Zealand will visit Bangladesh for a six-match white-ball series; however, their numbers will be diminished due to several players participating in Pakistan Super League and Indian Premier League this season.
As such, BCB have issued partial NOCs to Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nahid Rana, Tanzid Hasan and Rishad Hossain while Tim Southee and Mitchell Santner will miss out due to involvement.
New Zealand will play three One Day Internationals against Bangladesh starting on April 13 in Dhaka and Chattogram, each venue offering different playing conditions; Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium features spin-friendly pitches while Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium caters to stroke players.
New Zealand have an excellent history against Bangladesh, winning their last ODI series back in 2023. Bangladesh stepped into this series full of confidence following their impressive 2-1 win over Pakistan at home last time out; showing their resilience and adaptability. Furthermore, this series will serve as an important opportunity for their national cricket team to test combinations ahead of their tour of Australia, India, and West Indies later in 2019.
Matt Fisher, Will O’Rourke and Blair Tickner have been recalled to the ODI squad, while Tom Latham will remain captain for this series. All-rounder Kane Williamson also returns after missing the final of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 due to injury. These changes give New Zealand an added edge going into this tournament.
The One-Day International series will include both day-night and traditional afternoon starts to give fans ample opportunities to witness exciting contests of skill and power between both sides.
Furthermore, fielding restrictions that prevent teams from setting entirely defensive fields within the first 10 overs of an innings will add another tactical element that has been missing since its introduction in 2001 – yet still remain one of the most beloved forms of international cricket today.
T20I Series
New Zealand will travel to Bangladesh in April 2026 for a five-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series, beginning with two games at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and three matches held at Chattogram – weather conditions should remain comparable across both cities with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms likely in both.
The Black Caps will look to end a poor run in T20I cricket, having lost four out of six matches played in this format. They will be led by Tom Latham who takes over for Mitchell Santner due to his commitments with Mumbai Indians in IPL cricket.
Latham will be buoyed by the return of pace trio Blair Tickner, Matthew Fisher and William O’Rourke from injury recovery, but will miss Rachin Ravindra who has committed himself to Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise of IPL for now.
New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh may fall between the IPL and World Cup tournaments, forcing them to choose a second-string squad for their trip. Players such as Glenn Phillips, Trent Boult, and Lockie Ferguson could all be called up by their IPL franchises to represent them on tour of Bangladesh; leaving many key players unavailable and unavailable for selection for selection during New Zealand’s trip.
New Zealand will play their inaugural T20I match against Bangladesh, providing both teams an opportunity to familiarize themselves with each other’s playing styles.
Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium tends to favour spinners and will challenge visiting batters while Chattogram’s Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium presents coastal conditions for batsmen that might present different challenges altogether.
These T20Is in Dhaka will also serve as a warm-up for the Indian Premier League tournament that starts later in April. Both sides will hope to secure their spots in this crucial step towards preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup; and with just several T20Is left before it commences, both will look for victories in these T20Is before tournament commencement.
Match Schedule
New Zealand’s national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, is an ambitious side that regularly makes the final stages of international tournaments. Although not known for being elite players themselves, they possess enough talent on any given day to put up a fight and beat even top sides on their day if given enough opportunities. They currently hold both the ICC Champions Trophy and World Test Championship titles.
New Zealand’s early transition to a fully professional system allowed them to quickly establish successful teams and produce global superstars such as Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson, along with creating an attractive domestic T20 league and fearless style of play that have made the nation attractive to some of cricket’s biggest names.
The Bangladesh series will be an important one for both teams involved. New Zealand returns after their T20 World Cup campaign, offering fans and broadcasters more options with day/night fixtures at Dhaka Sher-e-Bangla Stadium and Chattogram Bir Shrestha Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium providing different playing conditions and environments.
As part of their series, both teams will compete in a five-match Twenty20 International series against each other. The opening match will take place at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on April 13, followed by two matches at National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on April 20 and 21. Both venues provide unique playing conditions; Mirpur favours spin bowlers while coastal conditions of Chattogram accentuate stroke play.
New Zealand will enter this T20I series without regular white-ball captain Mitchell Santner due to his participation with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Tom Latham will lead in his place, with several fast bowlers missing as they have signed contracts for Pakistan Super League or Indian Premier League tournaments; Blair Tickner and Will O’Rourke however will make their return after being injured earlier in 2018.
New Zealand have had a strong record against Bangladesh, winning all three ODIs and T20I series against them. Their Test rankings currently stand at second and they have won their last three home series against Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh – with young players such as Colin Munro and Ross Taylor emerging alongside established veterans like Brendon McCullum, Kane Williamson and Nathan Astle.
