Tests
On 14 February, England and West Indies begin their inaugural Test match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta).
This historic location was used in 1878 when British expats used all 270 silver rupees from melted coins they found lying around to create the Calcutta Cup trophy they later presented to Rugby Football Union (RFU).
As a result of this historic event, this match came to be known as Calcutta Cup match between them and RFU was later known by this name.
The match between these teams will take place on a newly-rolled pitch, and is anticipated to be low-scoring affair.
The West Indies should benefit from playing on home soil as both teams will need to take extra precaution in order not to lose wickets.
West Indies will make one change to their side that edged past Nepal by four runs in their tournament opener, swapping out left-armer Luke Wood for right-arm fast bowler Jamie Overton as part of their attack strategy. Overton is likely to prove pivotal as he provides balance to West Indies’ bowling attack.
After an uneven start, West Indies spinners quickly turned things around against England’s batsmen. Roston Chase removed Will Jacks for three-ball duck by trapping him lbw, while Gudakesh Motie made further inroads by taking out Harry Brook with another lbw delivery from him.
Sherfane Rutherford led the Windies with an unbeaten 76 off 42 balls that helped them achieve 246 for 9 in 40 overs despite spin spinner Motie’s three for 33 which caused them to falter at times.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy recently posted on social media the message, “Day 6,” to reflect the team’s stranding in India while waiting for charter flights arranged by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
South Africa are expected to depart on Saturday while Windies should leave on Sunday once their flight becomes available – this delay reportedly due to international airspace restrictions related to Israel-Iran tensions.
ODIs
Black Opal is offering fans of England’s 2027 tour to the Caribbean a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness this historic series in person.
ODIs and T20Is will take place at iconic venues like Kensington Oval in Barbados and Sabina Park in Jamaica – legendary rivalries between teams have long shaped these regions’ cricket landscapes.
Furthermore, an exciting social programme including an exclusive island tour as well as visiting cricket’s spiritual home will round off this unforgettable tour experience.
The West Indies and England have played 110 ODI matches against one another, each side winning 56 matches.
Together they have amassed more than 7,000 runs during ODIs; Joe Root has led England’s run-scoring with 30 or more runs scored across five innings in two of his matches against the West Indies.
England’s batting has also been particularly impressive; seven players have reached 30 or more runs during an innings played against them!
West Indies bowlers have held their opponents in check despite an impressive display, keeping England at bay from early in its innings and maintaining focus for key periods in game – something England struggled to do during its initial five overs as evidenced by its struggles to adapt.
West Indies teams have proven adept at hitting sixes – they have taken 13 of them compared to England’s five. But England suffered more from “brain dead cricket”, making poor decisions at critical moments and trying to win too quickly.
T20Is
West Indies cricket team defeated England cricket team by 30 runs in the second T20I of their series at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Opting to field first, Sherfane Rutherford scored an easy half century as Windies posted 196/6.
England never recovered as their spinners (Gudakesh Motie, Jofra Archer and Jason Holder) tore through their top order batting order quickly – leaving plenty of work ahead in their bid for semi-final qualification.
Windies bowlers were superb, making it difficult for England to defend their total at Wankhede Stadium on a night game with dew coming early.
Jofra Archer and Sam Curran both performed admirably with the ball but were unable to prevent an England collapse from taking place; their lack of discipline cost them dearly with them giving away 10 runs an over more often than necessary than should have been allowed.
Kemar Roach would break England’s resistance, dismissing Ben Stokes for 13. Alzarri Joseph then struck again when he dismissed Sam Foakes for one run a ball one.
Nkrumah Bonner and Darren Bravo provided support against England’s bold declaration with their stand of 73 runs between them.
Even after losing Jason Holder in the fifth over, England maintained an effective middle order to fight against Caribbean attacks. But eventually their resistance would crumble as Joe Root was dismissed for a duck; all out for 349 runs with Jonny Bairstow and Chris Woakes not making much impactful contribution.
Windies batsmen were dominant throughout, hitting 13 sixes off Wankhede pitch which offered good pace and bounce for them to score more runs than they normally would at home.
Meanwhile, home side’s poor batting showed they are yet to establish an effective batting line-up; furthermore Windies fielders performed excellently along with bowlers efforts and took an unassailable 2-0 lead in series against South Africa; which they look to maintain when facing South Africa on Tuesday for T20I game no 3.
T20 World Cup
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is an international cricket tournament featuring twenty teams from around the globe. This edition takes place between February 7 and March 8 in India and Sri Lanka and will include 54 matches at eight venues spanning both nations; US cricket will make their first ever appearance this year!
England held an early lead against West Indies but could not keep pace with their batsmen’s pace of run-chase. England managed a four-run win thanks to Phil Salt and Jos Buttler’s stellar work at the top of their order; meanwhile Windies top six batsmen found it difficult to make an impressionful contribution during England’s bowling performance largely kept them at bay from making any significant impacts in chase.
Although England had an unconvincing start to this tournament, their batsmen have found their groove. Joe Root and Alex Hales each scored half-centuries in three of their opening three matches while Ben Stokes is in position to add yet another fifty to his impressive haul this tournament.
With three straight victories against West Indies already under their belts in Kolkata on Monday, England have an excellent chance to advance further and may reach the finals as a team.
As reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Champions, the West Indies will aim to defend their crown. Each match will present a challenging test with potentially long-term effects for all involved – the last time that happened was 2022 when they beat New Zealand in an exciting final contest.
Wankhede Stadium, the site for Monday’s match between England and West Indies, boasts a long tradition of great cricketing matches between them. Ten years ago in Kolkata Chris Gayle made history when he scored an amazing 47-ball hundred to propel West Indies into the final of an event there.
England have made one change to their team that edged out Nepal by four runs in their tournament opener, swapping out left-arm seamer Luke Wood for right-armer Jamie Overton. Jofra Archer and Sam Curran remain, although both have struggled for wickets thus far in this competition.
