India vs England
The England cricket team represents England and Wales internationally in international cricket. It is administered by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), established after Marylebone Cricket Club closed down in 1997, which succeeded them.
A full member of the International Cricket Council, England have gained Test, One Day International (ODI), Twenty20 International (T20I) status since. Since 1999 the England cricket team have won 108 ODIs and 16 T20Is; always making strong contenders against Australia when competing for The Ashes trophy.
England was one of the early Test cricket nations when they visited South Africa for their inaugural tour in 1912. Unfortunately, England suffered in the 1930s and 1940s with Douglas Jardine’s uncompromising approach to winning Ashes leading to diplomatic issues against Australia during Bodyline series.
England’s fortunes improved post World War II under Len Hutton who led them to many memorable victories against West Indies and Australia teams.
In the 2020s, England had mixed fortunes. Starting strong under coach Chris Silverwood and captain Joe Root, cricket’s popularity declined due to COVID-19 pandemic in England; as a result, 2021-22 Ashes series proved an embarrassment.
Ben Stokes became captain alongside Brendon McCullum as coach; they heralded an era of attacking cricket known as Bazball which brought good results and ultimately brought them all the way through to World Cup final for first ever win ever over India for which five centuries were scored against them all together!
India won the first Test
Long after touring North America for the first time, England under the supervision of Lord’s and the MCC began playing Test matches against several of Britain’s former colonies such as South Africa and Australia.
Douglas Jardine’s aggressive bid to regain the Ashes from Australia – known as Bodyline due to his intimidating tactics – caused diplomatic friction with their government, but Len Hutton eventually succeeded in winning back the Ashes from them in 1954-55.
At The Oval, India started off their series against England with an emphatic win by scoring 359-3 on day one under ideal batting conditions.
England, however, suffered an unexpected collapse after reaching 334-4; eventually falling all out for 355. At one point it appeared as though India might need divine intervention to avoid defeat.
Luck was on their side. A day before The Oval Test began, an elephant named Bella wearing ceremonial cloth trotted across Kennington Stadium’s outfield as an omen of good luck, drawing cheers from crowds in attendance.
India won that Test match and red-ball series victory, recalibrating their global standing while ushering in an era of young, dynamic attacking cricket characterized by players like Virender Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar among many others who helped make India into powerhouse nation that still today.
India won the second Test
England were outclassed on day five at Edgbaston as India romped to an emphatic win. Bumrah was rested to allow his virus-infected body to fully recuperate while Akash Deep took Brydon Carse’s wicket to seal their series victory and the first Test victory ever won at Birmingham at their ninth attempt.
Rain delayed play on the fourth evening for nearly an hour and 40 minutes, providing India with the ideal conditions to make early inroads into England’s innings.
India soon made gains thanks to a damp track, with Deep taking two crucial wickets before lunch when Ben Stokes and Joe Root were sent packing by Deep.
Ben Smith eased to his sixth fifty of eight innings but failed to build on it with Woakes as he top-edged trying to cut a delivery off leg side – top-edging one delivery into leg side instead of making room.
At last, England were dismissed for an insufficient total. Deep’s delivery to Pope jagged off the seam, before bowler Vivek hit Brook on his pads with another delivery that struck.
Carse edged a low ball towards Shubman Gill at cover as India sealed an enormous victory and celebrated in style as they now head into Lord’s for a series decider on Thursday with one point advantage over Australia.
India won the third Test
The third Test at Lord’s was an exciting affair from beginning to end, with India finding hope when Ravindra Jadeja hit a six off Jofra Archer to take them up to 154-8 in their second innings.
England responded immediately however by taking four wickets early in the morning and setting themselves on course to victory.
Rishabh Pant drove Archer’s full-length delivery for four, only for him to be bowled lbw two balls later and left stranded on nine runs.
Archer then rampaged through the lower order taking out KL Rahul and Washington Sundar with ease to end any hope the tourists had of saving the match.
An Oval filled to capacity was packed in high hopes of an intense series finale and they weren’t left disappointed as tension increased with every pitch that flew past them.
England experienced an inauspicious start to the 2020s under Trevor Bayliss before Joe Root took over as captain in 2017. Under Joe Root, England made it all the way to the 2019 World Cup final and won it on an exciting last-ball decider; and tied 3-2 the Ashes series despite losing South Africa ODI series but rebounded well against Sri Lanka Tests and Pakistan T20 series; making England contenders for 2023 Cricket World Cup competition with many young players like Sam Curran, Jos Buttler, and Ben Stokes amongst them.
India won the fourth Test
KL Rahul and Shubman Gill’s heroic partnership rescued India from an impossible situation and earned them a draw against England at Old Trafford in the fourth Test match, although they trailed 3-0 with only one match remaining, threatening a third consecutive series loss on home soil.
Stokes was in excellent form without his spin duties, taking three wickets with an excellent low nip-backer from Stokes that bowled Rahul lbw off an offbreak that kept low, breaking Rahul and Gill’s stand of 188 runs and taking India down to 669-8.
England were not helped by their pitch or subpar first innings performance, yet had hopes to strike when Jofra Archer took two wickets with the second new ball in Jofra Archer’s opening over with this second new ball over.
Unfortunately, however, Siraj soon derailed this plan by nicking off Smith off off stump before trapping Josh Tongue lbw for 8 runs to leave them eight runs behind with 20 still needed to win the match.
Rahul, an outstandingly consistent batsman, remained undaunted by this daunting challenge and hit consecutive sixes off Sundar to bring up his seventh century in the series and reach his fourth double century against England – saving an outstanding series draw for India with another six off Jadeja’s off-spin delivery bringing his score to 231 not out and saving India from an incredible comeback effort by an outstanding team effort. It was truly outstanding performance from an outstanding player!
India won the fifth Test
On a grey and wet London morning on the last day of a Test match where 35 runs and four wickets still needed to win it all, The Oval was packed to capacity with spectators eagerly awaiting an exhilarating conclusion to an intense series and they weren’t left disappointed!
England’s batting collapsed against India’s outstanding seamers in an unforgettable final hour. Harry Brook and Joe Root posted sublime centuries, yet Siraj tore through England’s top order to create an exciting series finale.
By the time Woakes took to his bat with his dislocated left shoulder tucked under his jersey in a sling, he was already 17 runs shy of making history. Receiving a standing ovation when he took strike, but soon thereafter Atkinson held onto it until being bowled by Siraj’s full toss.
An exceptional series will long be remembered by cricket followers around the world. There was controversy, rancour and fiery farewells; ultimately India held their nerve to send England packing with four defeats in succession and maintain their dominance at home. It marked an extraordinary finish to an eventful season which began with an all-out whitewash against Sri Lanka before losses in Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan; ultimately leading them into summer with top spot on Test rankings!
