Middle Overs
As soon as the match entered its middle overs, SRH’s batsmen quickly put RR under pressure with an impressive 89-run partnership between Shikhar Dhawan and Abhishek Sharma which ensured momentum did not decline for them after they were both dismissed by Umesh Yadav.
Even after both were dismissed by Yadav however, Vijay Shankar kept up the momentum by reaching his fifty in just 27 balls ensuring their target was quickly achieved.
Both teams entered this season with high hopes and an intent to prove themselves dominant, boasting strong squads featuring younger players under experienced management as well as new-look sides under Sanju Samson. Both clubs looked prepared for victory on this match day.
SRH won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping for early movement on the pitch. Unfortunately, this strategy backfired spectacularly as the pitch quickly degraded into an ideal environment for batsmen to score runs quickly and freely. SRH took full advantage of this chance with ease as their batsmen scored easily throughout.
David Warner set the pace for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), scoring an exceptional 68 off 45 balls to lay the foundation. Ishan Kishan then followed suit, playing an equally brilliant knock of 71 from 48 balls in order to help his team to 286/6 in 6 overs.
Rajasthan Royals struggled to cope with their situation during the middle overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tom Kohler-Cadmore both were caught behind the stumps by Simarjeet Singh and Mohammed Shami within consecutive overs, and thereafter their batting collapsed as wickets fell almost every over, leading them to an ever increasing deficit total.
Jos Buttler made an impressive start to his Royal Challengers (RR) career. He struck two boundaries and eight sixes in one innings – breaking several IPL records as well. Dhruv Jurel assisted Buttler by also hitting some boundary hits; ultimately reaching their target with only 44 runs remaining; one of the highest totals ever scored in an IPL match!
Final Overs
Rajasthan Royals batsmen finally got going after an initially slow start and took their chase to an exciting conclusion. Sanju Samson and Riyan Parag both hit fifties to help close in on South India’s 286-run target.
However, SRH’s bowlers ensured they remained in control by restricting the visitors to just six runs in the final over.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed a key wicket in Shimron Hetmyer who was out for 124 off 123 balls; with this fifth wicket of the innings under his belt he became leader of the Purple Cap race.
Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad started the innings off quickly. In just six overs they amassed 94 runs – the fifth-highest powerplay total ever in IPL history – led by captain Cummins’ unbeaten 45-ball hundred and Ishan Kishan’s explosive 67 off 30 balls that added depth and stability to their batting unit.
Jofra Archer returned from being banned by ECB to play in IPL 2024 with an immediate command as death bowling in the 10th over.
To everyone’s surprise, his delivery left outside off stump was wider than expected and Hetmyer took full advantage to score his 24-ball half century.
Archer returned with his usual length delivery in the next over, but this time it resulted in Abhishek Sharma miscuing it to cover-point for an easy catch. Archer struck again with his third over, as Kishan carting him for two sixes over extra-cover.
Harshal Patel and Adam Zampa eventually broke down RR’s batting in the 14th over, when both bowlers struck with wicket-taking deliveries from Patel (Jaiswal, Parag) before Jurel was run-out by Simarjeet Singh back-the-deck hustle.
Zampa then bowled Samson a slower bouncer that caused him to hole out to long-on; yet still, RR fell short by just one run; marking an unprecedented moment in IPL history! Despite their best efforts, this team came up short by just one run; marking only ever time that any team had fallen short since its introduction in 2008.
