Bangladesh A vs Afghanistan

Bangladesh A displayed an all-round display to secure an eight-wicket win against Afghanistan A in their Asia Cup Rising Stars 2025 clash in Doha.

Ripon Mondol opened up their victory by bowling an explosive opening over that saw Imran Mir and Sediqullah Atal depart consecutive overs en route to 14/3 for Afghanistan A.

Rakibul Hasan (3/10) and SM Meherob Hasan (2/14) tightened further as Afghanistan struggled with rotation strike.

Habibur Rahman and Jishan Alam had made early departures for Bangladesh A, but Mahidul Islam Ankon and Zawad Abrar guided their chase with ease as Bangladesh A racked up six consecutive wins to top Pool A in this tournament.

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh

Afghanistan and Bangladesh have shared an intricate history since 13th-century Garmsir-based Khalaj tribesmen led a Muslim conquest of Bengal. Since then, both countries have maintained trade and cultural ties that span millennia.

Bangladesh A’s batsmen kept their cool to chase a small target with ease, keeping their composure and rotating strike effectively despite losing Habibur and Jishan after they made steady starts. Mahidul and Abrar helped guide Bangladesh through to victory without difficulty.

Ripon set the scene early for Afghanistan’s implosion, dismissing Imran Mir and Sediqullah Atal within his opening over. Rakibul then produced an extraordinary three-wicket burst, dismissing Rasooli and Ahmadzai simultaneously in quick succession.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan 2024

Bangladesh fell just short in an exciting match that required sensible batting and low-risk cricket, in stark contrast with Afghanistan, who displayed both depth and maturity with an emphatic victory that earned them an unassailable 2-0 advantage in the series.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s century, Azmatullah Omarzai’s all-round show, and Mohammad Nabi’s composure during chase were key contributors towards an incredible victory that propels Afghanistan closer towards qualifying for 2025 Champions Trophy qualification.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh struggled to find their rhythm during an awkward first innings. While Ibrahim Zadran made 95 not out, their other batters failed to set and they were bowled out for just 190 runs.

Spinners including Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nahid Rana failed to maintain pressure while batsmen often overshot on an outgoing pitch that provided plenty of turn.

As Afghanistan chased 245, they lost wickets regularly; Sediqullah Atal and Rahmat Shah both succumbed to injuries that kept him off the pitch, yet Rahmanullah Gurbaz refused to let his team down and, alongside Azmatullah Omarzai, made Bangladesh look ineffective before their partnership produced a hundred-run stand that put their visitors ahead before Omarzai was run out due to an irresponsible shot and was run out off a reckless shot by Bangladeshis.

Rashid Khan then took three wickets within six overs to effectively end Bangladesh’s hopes of mounting a comeback, including Mustafizur Rahman at his second attempt from straight deliveries from Rashid. Emon and Tanzim managed a late surge that got them within three runs of victory before their required rate proved too high.

Bangladesh have won their past four matches against Afghanistan, but an unexpected loss here would provide plenty of food for thought ahead of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Afghanistan have proven themselves time after time as a team full of surprises and heroes who come through when needed; their fierce rivalry is something to cherish.

Bangladesh then responded by posting an impressive total of 198/6 thanks to Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 76 not out and Jaker Ali’s quickfire 37 runs, both played ably by Najmul Hossain Shanto and Jaker Ali respectively.

The third and final ODI was an exciting thriller that went down to the wire. Afghanistan’s bowlers led from start to finish, with Azmatullah Omarzai and Rashid Khan picking up crucial wickets early to restrict Bangladeshi scoring.

Meanwhile, their batsmen struggled on an uneven pitch that offered plenty of turn and variable bounce – only Ibrahim Zadran’s 95-run knock managed to stem their decline before being dismissed in 28 overs.

Bangladesh started off slowly but soon gained momentum when their openers Soumya Sarkar and Tanzid Hasan began building partnerships of 49 runs before Omarzai struck again, getting Sarkar to chop on for 26 runs before Rashid Khan claimed Mohammad Nabi with an lbw googly from Rashid and Bangladesh were in trouble.

Mahmudullah and Mehidy Hasan Miraz steered Bangladesh towards a safe total of 244/8 in 50 overs with Mahmudullah just missing out on reaching a century and Mehidy taking 66 runs – yet still it was not enough to prevent a whitewash of this series.
