India will turn their focus from Test series, against New Zealand, to T20Is when travelling to South Africa for a four-match T20 series rematch of the ICC T20 World Cup final and hoping for revenge at home against India’s young squad led by T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav hoping to cement themselves within core group going forward.
India currently leads South Africa 15-11 in T20Is since 2004, with one match ending without any result. This matchup promises to be crucially important.
AB de Villiers and his Proteas will look to make amends after defeat in Bridgetown at the World Cup final in June, while also improving their ICC T20 Team Rankings.
They begin the series in Durban’s Kingsmead on Friday with St George’s Park in Gqebera playing host on Monday – both will be streamed live via JioCinema.
However, Gautam Gambhir won’t travel due to an impending move to Australia so VVS Laxman will step in as head coach whereas injury prevents him from joining their teammates – instead acting as stand-in coach with pacers Mayank Yadav and Shivam Dube missing from joining.
India
India will try and ease their disappointment of losing the ICC World Cup final against South Africa when they meet them again in a four-match T20 series, having won both bilateral T20 series against them previously and currently leading ICC T20I rankings.
Furthermore, this series provides India’s young stars an opportunity to stake their claims as future team members.
Indian team are in good shape with no new injury concerns leading up to this match. Their batting lineup will be led by Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues with Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Amanjot Kaur as supporting batswomen;
Kranti Goud and Sree Charani will lead their bowling attack which both took wickets during their initial outing against Sri Lanka.
Gautam Gambhir will not feature in India’s squad for this series as he has left Australia to prepare for the Border Gavaskar Trophy, being replaced by VVS Laxman on tour.
Pace sensation Mayank Yadav, however, due to injury will not join them; also absent for South Africa are AB de Villiers, Kagiso Rabada Anrich Nortje Tabraiz Shamsi Quinton de Kock; South African coach Rob Walker will face an interesting selection decision when choosing his squad from those available players that remain.

The first match will take place at Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban on Friday; second at St George’s Park Gqebera on Sunday; while final two will be hosted by Centurion and Wanderers respectively on July 11 and 13. This series should prove riveting, given India lead in ICC T20I rankings while Proteas rank sixth.
Both teams have something to prove in this series, especially after India’s win in the last game. India’s bowling unit was fantastic in containing South African batsmen; Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson managed half-centuries after struggling early, likely remaining for this final matchup as well.
South Africa struggled to put forth their best performance during this series, particularly with their top order. Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks and Tristian Stubbs failed to impress with their bat, while David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen couldn’t contribute enough runs for their side. Bowling wise, only Lutho Sipamla and Gerald Coetzee provided any sort of resistance against Indian batters.
Gautam Gambhir will not lead India for this series; VVS Laxman will serve in his place. Paceman Mayank Yadav is also out due to an injury; Shivam Dube remains uncertain.
